- About the Artist -

Nick Lorenzo has had a lifelong involvement in the world of photography. In high school he was an award winning sports photographer.  He built his own darkroom which allowed him to expand his potential for new work and learn the traditional craft.  He worked and associated with a local studio photographer and was introduced to quality print production for weddings, news, and commercial work. Primarily, he was taught the basics of portrait lighting, posing and finial presentation of work. Those years were a learning ground for large and medium format camera work, quality film development, and professional print making.

In school, Nick was president of the photography club and photographic editor of the school newspaper.  When he attended college he was again the president of the photography club and on the yearbook photographic staff.

It was in law school that Nick began to focus his attention on natural light techniques and landscape images in color and black and white.  He was the graphic arts editor for a magazine, “Juris.” He worked on the first edition and his cover shot taken at night during a lightening storm won first place in national competition.  It was then that he was involved in the interrelation of the photo image and the editorial message of the publication.  His work covered inner city racial issues as well as other timely legal issues of the turbulent late 1960’s.

It was during that time that Nick developed a commercial book of business which including wedding photography and legal photography.  He did all of his own film developing, printing, and presentation. It was there that he was exposed to the impact in legal proceedings that telling images have on proving/disproving issues in lawsuits.

After graduation from law school and passing the BAR exam, Nick concentrated his activities to  building a law practice, but did enter a new photography area of color travel photography and producing exhibition size prints.  At that time Nick first went to the Carmel, CA area to fulfill a desire to capture the wonder of the iconic coast of Northern California and Big Sur.  On the technical side, Nick built a darkroom equipped to process black and white work as well develop color slides and make positive color prints in exhibition sizes.  With the elimination of some color processes, such as Ilfochrome, Nick has concentrated in Black and white photography.

In the late 1970’s, Nick found the opportunity to do civil trial work on a national level.  The demands of this type of legal practice, lecturing, and writing, left little time for concentrated photographic work. It was not until the late 1990’s that Nick decided to return to photography with a vengeance and a purpose.  In 1998, Nick formed a mentoring relationship with Rod Dresser of Carmel, CA.  As a student and frequent fellow shooter with Rod, Nick developed his portfolio of landscape, floral work, and human figure images.  Relationships were developed with other photographers, mainly Doug Campbell of Los Gatos, CA., with whom Nick photographed in Sedona, Arizona, Utah National Parks, Oregon Coast, Death Valley, Central California, and coastal CA.

In recent years, Nick has continued his development of his skills and vision by working individually and in workshops with Kim Weston from Carmel, CA.  Nick continues to venture to quality locations throughout the United States.  Generally traveling with his sons, Nick has been to the Northern Oregon coast, Badlands of South Dakota and the Northern CA coast at Mendocino, Sea Ranch, Salt Point, and Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

Nick has won numerous photographic competitions, including best of show, but has developed a customer appeal with fans of fine art photography.

At age 74, Nick still finds excitement and challenge in new opportunities to see new subjects through his eye for detail, form, and the drama of black and white.
